On upload, an animated GIF is transcoded to H.264 video in an MP4 container, with no audio track and a loop flag. The interface keeps calling it a GIF; the file underneath is video.
This is genuinely better for everyone. The same animation arrives in a fraction of the bytes, at full colour depth, and plays back smoothly instead of stuttering.
