What the interface calls a GIF is stored as a short, silent, looping MP4. You can take that MP4 directly, which is far smaller and smoother than a real GIF.
Longer videos from Premium accounts are the same format, just bigger files. Nothing special is needed.

If the clip is going anywhere that accepts video, take the MP4. The GIF format is thirty-plus years old, capped at 256 colours per frame, and routinely produces a file five to ten times larger than the equivalent MP4 while looking worse in motion.
Take the real GIF only when the destination demands one — some wikis, forum signatures, older ticketing systems and a few chat integrations still do.
It will not touch a post that is not publicly readable, and it will not extract a still frame as video. It also will not stitch several posts in a thread into one file — download each and join them in an editor if that is what you are after.
